Essay

This thesis is the first post-soviet research of rural youth and of the mutual influence of rural and urban cultures in the province and the capital. The research is interdisciplinary and is based on a variety of sources - archive, literary, video sources and also the author's field study (detailed interviews and survey results). New methodological approaches that have never been used in Ukrainian ethnology before were applied in this work, cross-cultural and socio-cultural approaches in particular; the definition of "rural youth" was improved. The theory of acculturation was applied to find out the peculiarities of the migrants' adaptation which explains the process of culture change that takes place during a permanent direct conflict between two cultural groups. The work traces the peculiarities of acculturation of new comers in the cities, the symptoms of cultural shock and the factors of successful acculturation.
