The issues of professional preparation of translators is refined in the dissertational research, the content of their professional cognitive abilities is clarified. This concept is treated as not innate, but acquired universal system of mental actions aimed at the differentiation of generalized image of the original text and its fast and quality conversion in foreign-language constructs of a new generalized image. Criteria, indicators and levels of formation of professional cognitive abilities of the translators in the process of their professional preparation are explained. The first criterion is a measure of the capacity for motivationally-volitional organization of translation, the second is the degree of the implementation perfection of operationally-procedural algorithms of perceptual, intellectual and mnemonic actions, and the third criterion is the adequacy of reflexive evaluation of the mental model of the new generalized image of the translation text. The only external indicator of the studied phenomenon is the effectiveness of translators' activity (quantitative and qualitative). As a result, questionnaire and conducting exploratory experiments revealed promising directions of perfection of formation process of translators' professional cognitive abilities. In the thesis are substantiated three groups of purposeful pedagogical conditions of formation of professional cognitive abilities of translators and defined guidance content, aimed at their implementation in the process of professional preparation. The first of these directs conation of future professionals on the appropriate use of different types of motivation and determination of the optimal configuration of the intermediate goals on the way to the goal, that pooling their energy potential in the organizational process of translation. The second group contributes to the differentiation of the generalized image of the original text during his quick perception and finding a few alternative variants of foreign-language constructs, and their comparison, combination and synthesis to create the optimal variant of the new generalized image. The third group enhances the tendency of the future specialists to the implementation of the interim fixation of a new generalized image of the text translation from selected constructs and makes the right decision regarding approval or rejection on the condition of discrepancy with the generalized image of the original text and return to the search for other options. The results of experimental verification of effectiveness of reasonable pedagogical conditions in the professional preparation process of translators in higher educational establishments are shown.
