Essay

The study showed that a full-structured multifunctional Ukrainian language was utilized in the social and cultural space of inter-war Lviv. Its vocabulary included words to denote the concepts and realities in different spheres of public life, urban space, household activities and forms of etiquette communication. The Ukrainian authentic vocabulary and significant borrowings from the languages in the same territory comprised the basis for Lviv koine. A comparative analysis of three editions of the "Street" novel (Ukrainian: "Vulytsya") by Bohdan Nyzhankivs'kyi (1936, 1941, and 1995) and lexicographic representations of the target lexical units of Western region variety in the Ukrainian dictionaries at the end of ХІХth through ХХth centuries has helped to illustrate lexicographic and editorial practices during the Soviet period. The Soviet editorial and lexicographic policy was directed to make standard Ukrainian language similar to Russian and to restrict the usage of the vocabulary which had been incorporated by the nationwide Ukrainian standard language from its Western region variety at the end of the XIXth - in the first half of XXth century.
