Essay

The thesis is devoted to the problems of teaching foreign language reading for specific purposes to journalism students. The PR texts based methodology of teaching foreign language reading for specific purposes to future journalists has been theoretically substantiated and practically elaborated. The aims and content of the proposed methodology have been specified as well as the structure of professional communicative competence in reading with the skills relevant to each of its components. Among those skills a critical media literacy has been defined as a prerequisite for success in teaching future journalists how to read professional texts. A theoretically grounded classification of reading types has been modified to be applied to PR texts. The comparison of recent instructional models for teaching language learning strategies has revealed the crucial role of explicit teacher’s instructions in improving language learners’ proficiency. It has been deduced that explicit instructions facilitate reading efficiency and must be taken into account when develop the methodology of teaching reading for specific purposes. The PR and media texts have been chosen in compliance with the identified principles and criteria for selection of learning materials for teaching foreign language reading for specific purposes. The learning stages have been defined and a system of exercises for formation and development of reading skills by means of PR texts has been created. The model of learning process as well as the range of activities have been devised alongside the suggested method. Experimentally proven efficiency of the developed methodology enabled to introduce the guidelines for the organization of teaching process.
