The thesis analyzes the process of formation and development of ship floodability theory (the last third of the 19th to the first third of the 20th centuries). The preconditions of the problem of ship floodability are discussed, the development of shipbuilding in the age of sail and the wooden hull are characterized, and the process of formation and development of the metallic shipbuilding industry in the world and in the Russian Empire in particular is covered. Ship floodability is considered as the constituent of ship theory, in particular, theory of basic statics of ship. Systematized diverse material of primary sources, the author presented the aforesaid theory in the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and Ukraine, by comparing this process with the foreign one. It is proved that scientific and pedagogical work of scientists and ship engineers S.O. Makarov, A.N. Krylov, I.G. Bubnov, V.P. Kostenko, A.P. Van der Fleet and G.E. Pavlenko became the basis for the development of new ideas for the further technical studies in the field of shipbuilding and development of the theory of ship floodability at the present stage.
