Essay

This thesis deals with the study of composition as a way of Latin word-formation. The analysis of theoretical and methodological fundamentals of compositology has shown the historical terminology heredity, but at the same time the ambiguity in the interpretation of the terms "composite", "composition" in modern linguistics that led to the emergence of different classifications. The extrapolation of provisions of theoretical sources to empirical material has allowed to develop the author's definition of the notions "composition" and "composite". The definition of the notions "composition" and "composite" in a broad sense has been found out to be the optimal interpretation of the phenomenon of composition in the diachrony (from Archaic to Medieval Latin). The composition has been defined as the phenomenon of formation of lexical units with complex structure motivated with the help of structural and semantic compatibility of components - words and stems. The composite has been defined as the complex lexical unit formed by the union of two or more words or stems related to a certain subject being characterized by semantic unity and functional and syntactic indivisibility.
