The thesis focuses on researching the methodology of teaching abstract and gist translation of magazine feature articles in English to senior pupils of secondary schools specializing in foreign languages. The aim, content and principles are detailed to guarantee the effective functioning of the suggested methodology. The genre characteristics of feature articles are specified. The notions of abstract and gist translation are presented: linguistic peculiarities, special techniques and ways of their performance. Material selection for teaching abstract and gist translation of magazine feature articles in English to senior pupils of secondary schools specializing in foreign languages is carried out on the basis of the developed criteria. The two subsystems of exercises are formed. Both the subsystems and the organising model of teaching process are put into practice. The experimental teaching has proved the validity of the suggested methodology. Methodological recommendations to teachers for organizing teaching abstract and gist translation of magazine feature articles in English to senior pupils of secondary schools specializing in foreign languages have been developed.
