Dissertation is devoted to investigation of different aspects of homestead (yard) functioning in Southern Rus' in 10th-13th cent. The role of homestead as a place of patrimonial farmstead, economical activity, architectural complex and crucial element of building up villages and towns is uncovered. It became possible by using of archaeological, narrative, ethnographical, historical and lexical sources. A comparison of town and village homesteads displayed some features concerned with its' sizes, families economical way of life, general sites building up features, relation to communication ways. A tendency connected with development of village homestead from planning as a yard with buildings along its perimeter in 10th-11th cent. to enclosed yards which appeared in 12th-13th cent. is traced of. Discovering of separate elements of a homestead and its' planning structure made it possible to marked out 5 types of buildings location in a homestead. A place of yard is reviewed in historical, juridical and demographical aspects. It is also offered an approach to way of counting the middle size of Old Rus' family.
