Essay

The thesis is devoted to the complex research of the processes of development of tanning handicraft industry of the late XIXth - early to mid XXth centuries Middle Overdnipro Land Ukrainians. The author analyzed the state and peculiar features of sources and determined the level of research of the problem in the native historiography. The components of the leather production process are examined and the main centers of tanning, fur, shoemaking, sheepskin coat and saddle making industries are defined. The author analyzed the everyday life of the Ukrainian artisans, namely living conditions and health situation, consumption power, satisfaction of material and spiritual wants, as well as their customs, rituals and imaginations. The choice of tanning handicraft industry on the Middle Overdnipro Land is enumerated. Also there is an analysis of the regional peculiarities of cut, decoration, names and popularity of the main kinds of leather and sheepskin products.
