Drohushevska I. The scientific-and-applied aspects of the national place-names standardization

The basic principles of development, structure and maintenance of State Register of Geographical Names of Ukraine database are justified. The main approaches to different place-names types and classes were determined. Basing on the complex approach to place-names normalization the informative descriptors for place-names normalization, registration and preservation in State Register of Geographical Names of Ukraine database and for using such information in carthography and GIS were elaborated. The main informative descriptors are: standardized place-name (in Ukrainian, Roman or original language (for foreign toponyms)), geographical feature type, administrative connection, geographical values etc. Using the system of the informative descriptors the registration forms for place-names collection, normalization, registration and preservation were elaborated.Dissertation is devoted to the justification of the theoretical-and-methodical principles of national place-names standardization (normalization) and its practical realization by creation of the State Register of Geographical Names of Ukraine. Domestic and foreign experience in the field of place-names standardization is analysed and basic tendencies are determined. The theoretical-and-methodological aspects of place-names research (scientific approaches, research methods) are represented and definitions are improved
