Essay

Object: figure of known Ukrainian ethnographer and public activist Volodymyr Shukhevych. Objective: comprehensive scientific analysis of ethnographic activity of V. Shukhevych. Methods: general scientific (analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction), special scientific (comparative-historical, statistical), specific scientific (prosopography). Results: for the first time comprehensively summarized ethnographic activity of V. Shukhevych that reliance on great sources and historiographical framework; in scientific circulation introduced a number of new archival materials, included the epistolary heritage of V. Shukhevych; outlines (best of available sources) territory of Galician Hutsulshchyna, ethnographic materials from the settlements of which came to the work of V. Shukhevych "Hutsulshchyna"; analyzed the texts of three editions of "Hutsulshchyna" (original Ukrainian-language of late XIX - early XX century, Polish-language and reprint reissue from Ukrainian-language version of the work of late XX century) and indicated on their differences in text and illustrations; through characterization of using the materials of "Hutsulshchyna" by Lviv experts in Carpathians of XX - early XXI century described the value of V. Shukhevych ethnographic activity for the development of ethnology, improved methodology of ethnographic activity scientific characteristics for people-experts of second half of XIX - early XX century (by example of V. Shukhevych). Scope of application: for writing of monograph on the development of Ukrainian ethnographic science, activity of V. Shukhevych; for developing of special courses on the science about Carpathians and history of Ukrainian ethnology for university students.
