Povyssha M. Activity of M.L. Schukin (1848-1924) in the context of the development of railway transport

The dissertation is devoted to complex analysis of Mykola Leonidovych Schukin's life, his scientific, research, pedagogical and administrative activity. M. L. Schukin was an out-standing engineer on ways of communication, professor of Technological institute, a prominent specialist in railway transport industry, a railway administrator, a famous expert on rolling stock of railways. On the basis of wide range of sources the contribution of M.L. Schukin to the development of national steam- and carriage building has been outlined, his activity in building of railway network, steam locomotives and diesel engines has been highlighted as well. Wide range of M.L. Schukin's activity became the reflection of scientific and practical requirements of his time, being dictated by aspiration to participate in the solution of major tasks of engineering science, railway transport, technical education (especially that of women). The system of his views was the result of interaction and fight between out-of-date perceptions and innovative tendencies in science and technology, being the search of scientific ways to develop both science and technology. His activity resulted in high-quality changes in process railway transport operation and functioning, that became a key moment in history of engineering ideas in the Russian empire.
