Essay

The research focuses on the study of atheist's personality psychological well-being. The paper contains theoretical substantiation, methodical principles and the results of the empirical research of this problem. The theoretical model of well-being factors consists of value congruity between person and his/her social group; social engagement and support; feeling of existential and social security; belief certainty; purpose and meaning of life. Religious group in our sample has demonstrated higher positive relations, environmental mastery, and purpose in life, self-acceptance, and life satisfaction. Atheists have got higher autonomy rates. The research has revealed that values religious people tend to choose are conducive to higher psychological well-being rates. Probationers' well-being indexes relate to the value congruity, the measure of similarity between personal and group value profiles. Atheists tend to get even higher benefits from such similarity. In the dissertation, the substance of the sources of happiness and its statistical relations with the psychological well-being indexes are discovered. In comparison with religious and indifferent probationers, atheists demonstrate the importance of money, success, and especially scientific knowledge. Meanwhile, comparison between atheists who mentioned and did not mention science as a source of happiness discovered that scientific interests bear no relation with the psychological well-being. Atheists demonstrated stronger positive correlation between interpersonal/social sources of happiness and psychological well-being, than religious group.
