Essay

The thesis is devoted to the study of literary hoax Porphyry Horotak, created by Leonid Mosendz and Yuriy Klen in 1946 in Austria. The research focuses on literary hoax, considering its importance in the literary emigration process during the 1940s. Special attention is devoted to the issue, that Porphyry Horotak for all genre peculiarities is a literary hoax, not a common pseudonym of Leonid Mosendz and Yuriy Klen. In support of this definition it is claimed that there took place the dual creative process of making the image, its biography and then publishing a collection of poems under the fake name. The research confirms that the authors of literary hoaxes can be intended by the motives, which directly affect the functions of mystification. The thesis suggests a classification of the most famous Ukrainian hoaxes by functions. There are functions of myth-creating, conspiration, replacement as well as therapeutic, provocative function, the function of transformation of textual space, testing a new artistic orientations function etc. Porphyry Horotak combines therapeutic function (as a way of overcoming social and cultural exclusion), provocative function and function of testing of new artistic orientation by means of joke and game. Thus Porphyry Horotak is the game hoax that emerged from the incident and functioned as a joke simultaneously doing some literary tasks. Porphyry Horotak in his parodies criticized contradictory tendencies in Art Ukrainian movement like criticism of «neo-classical» concept, «the national organic style» by Yuriy Sherekh, «the concept of great literature» by Ulas Samchuk etc. The three sections of the dissertation discuss the genre features of literary hoaxes and functions of Porphyry Horotak in the context of the most famous hoaxes in the history of the Ukrainian literature. The collection of poems named «The Diabolic Parables» illuminates the features of D.-P. life, tells about the life of «displaced persons» and their difficult choice between repatriation and salvation beyond. Rich intertextual elements of the collection became a new stage in the development of literary parody and led to the emergence of other hoaxes and parodies of the territory of emigration.
