The dissertation is devoted to the theoretical and empirical study of mnemonic activity development of students in the process of learning a foreign language by means of listening comprehension and the ways of the mentioned phenomenon intensification. The research paper reveals the theoretical approaches to the study of mnemonic activity, empirical peculiarities of students' mnemonic activity in the process of learning a foreign language, criteria (ability to perceive, understand and memorize foreign language information perceived aurally; skills in logical and semantic processing of foreign language information perceived aurally; accuracy of verbal encoding and reproduction of foreign language information perceived aurally), indicators, levels (high, medium, low) and the dynamics of this phenomenon among students are identified, the model for the development of mnemonic activity is implemented, its effectiveness is proved through activation of listening comprehension mechanisms (the mechanism of language and motor analyzers stimulation, the sound mechanism of lasting message adjustment, the mechanism of adaptation of the listener regarding an audiotext, the mechanism of speech chain segmentation, the mechanism of understanding individual words and predicting their meanings in the context, the mechanism of reasonable analysis of the speech message, the mechanism of abstraction from unfamiliar words, the mechanism of auditory guess), psycho-pedagogical and methodological guidelines (learn the peculiarities of students'mnemonic activity; study the features of listening as a form of speech; investigate listening comprehension in the context of its use for improving the mnemonic activity of students; consider and create conditions in which listening as a kind of verbal activity will be the most effective for achieving the above objective; encourage students to explore the specifics of their mnemonic activity beside the educational process; be in constant searching for ways to develop mnemonic activity of students; demonstrate interest in the success of the students, using words of encouragement and support especially for students whose level of mnemonic activity is low; motivate students to pursue their mnemonic activity improvement after the course completion; develop the students skills of effective work with means of listening comprehension; encourage students to keep a diary of introspection; etc.) for foreign language teachers are offered to enhance mnemonic activity of students by means of listening comprehension.
