Essay

The thesis is devoted to the ethnic and national identity of the Germans in context of the migration processes during the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st century. It is based on the results of the author's own ethnographic survey as well as the vast complex of sources and research literature. Main attention is paid to the issues of the modern ethnic and national identity of Germans. The impact of the attempt to establish the multicultural society for Germans' identity is analyzed. As a result, it is suggested that the ethnic aspect of Germans' ethnic and national identity is weakened. The causes for such circumstance are: Germans' guilt for Nazis crimes during the Second World War; the preapprehension to such terms as 'ethnic' and 'national'; the denial of the German identity in favor of the European or other one; the remaining of the division of the society into 'Ossi' and 'Wessi' after the re-unification. As a result, the modern Germans abandoned their ethnic and national self-identification. Only rare cases of the outpouring of the festive nationalism are being observed.
