Essay

Dissertation is devoted to the study of scientific and scientific-organizational activity of the well-known scientist-archaeologist of the late XIXth - early XXth c. E.R von Stern, the definition of his role in the development of native archaeological science and the creation of the ancient archeology school. In this work, based on a wide range of sources, both published materials and archival documents, the scientific path of the E.R von Stern was analyzed. It was concluded that his productive long-term research (cabinet and field), as well as scientific and organizational activity in all the main components (analysis, theory, practice, methodology, pedagogics) were objectively contributed to the formation and development of the ancient archeology of the North Black Sea region at the end of the XIXth - early XXth c. The influence of E.R von Stern on this process is marked in the first place in his advanced for the time Greek colonization theory, based on archaeological sources, the systematic research of the main antique sites of North-west Black Sea region - Berezan settlement and Tyras; in introduction of mass archaeological material, as a full historical source, to the scientific circles; in development of basic methodical basis for archaeological research, as well as purposeful archaeological personnel policy. In the research the author emphasizes that owing to the E.R. von Stern, native antique archeology has become a serious, truly scientific discipline and further had been developing with the underlying principles, which had been incorporated into it by E.R von Stern.
