Essay

The dissertation presents theoretical and critical research on applicationof geometrical ornament in figurative language of Ukrainian Art in 1910–1930’s.In the context of changes of aesthetic bases and refusal from representativedescription and academic rules, appearance and development of non-subjectart (abstractive art) was rooted from folk ornament, which served as a sourceof new coloristic decisions and universal formative means. Being inspired by theornament in the search of their own figurative language, artists were activein creation of ornamental compositions for textile and ceramic decoration, interiordesign and theatrical costumes, thus laying foundations for the art designdevelopment in Ukraine. The dissertation reveals peculiarities of artistic practice – decorative, appliedart and scenography — that successfully synthesized elements of geometricornament and new aesthetics of Avant-Garde. Analyses of artworksof Ukrainian Avant-Garde of 1910–1930’s witnesses active functioning of elementsand modifications of geometric ornament. Also the theoretical basisof Avant-Garde proves conscious integration or converging of decorativeand descriptive spheres in works of artists.Work of artists in the sphere of decorative arts specified as direct continuationof experiments in easel painting. Industrial art became realizationof succession of theoretic statements of Avant-Garde representatives, suchas distinguishing of simple forms, local colors, accents on composition, rhythmof colours and lines, correlation of forms and space. Experiments of Avant-Garde artists in textile, ceramics and sculpture influenced design developmentof XX century.
