Essay

The thesis has fulfilled a complex study of semantic, functional and communicative features of the appellative means in the modern Ukrainian language. Such approach has detected structural, grammatical, semantical, communicative and pragmatic features of its functioning in colloquial discourse. The research work deals also with the problem of the vocative case in Ukrainian language. The vocative case is the case used for a noun identifying the person (animal, object etc.) being addressed and / or occasionally the determiners of that noun. For a long time in linguistics the question about the role, character and functional characteristics of the vocative case was controversial one. There is no single definition of the term: vocative, vocative case, vocative form, appellative, communicative appellative, communicant. Traditional view on vocative as a form for a long time excluded it from special studies of Ukrainian case paradigm. As it was shown there is no complex research, which concerns the vocative case at the present scientific stage. The analysis of the representation of appeal in different micro contexts in the Ukrainian language (from the point of view of system addresser - addressee) allowed to construct the typology of vocatives and to outline the circle of their functions. According to communicative approach: appellative means - specialized forms, language means, which are used to bind, maintain and regulate the speech contact, which are carrying out vocative, phatic, identifying, ranking, emotive and etiquette functions in the process of communication.
