Essay

The thesis under discussion contains systematic analysis of the interaction between verbal and non-verbal means of communication in a dramatic text, with a particular emphasis being laid upon its cultural, ethnic-psychological, and cognitive aspects. The dramatic text has been regarded as a creolized or poly-coded item. The denomination of its characters, as well as their speech and author's speech have been presented in three different fonts, forming, nevertheless, one whole visual, structural, meaningful, and functional unit. In the dramatic text, there is a distinct differentiation between the author's speech (in the form of remarks) on the one hand, and the characters' speech (in the form of replicas) - on the other. This has enabled to view the characters' speech as a verbal means of communication, whereas the author's speech - as non-verbal means of communication. Verbal communication imitates spontaneous colloquial speech, in other words - a dialogue, which is implemented through simple sentences. The author's speech (non-verbal communication) makes the text informativity more compact. Particular attention has been drawn to the textual functions of remarks: presentative-nominative, compacting, strengthening, specifying, duplicating, expositional, and terminating ones. The pragmatic peculiarity of a drama, the latter usually being presented as both a Universe of culture and a means of communication, has enabled to draw a bordering line between the dramatic text and the dramatic literary work, which are supposed to be in a constant state of inclusion with each other. It means that the dramatic text, as a lingual phenomenon, influences a reader, while the dramatic literary work verbalizes the theatrical action for a spectator. The analysis of the dramatic text of numerous Bukovynian writers has been performed by means of basic categorical features: combinability, integrity, completeness, anticipation, division, literary time-space, and intertextuality.
