Essay

The central issue of the thesis is the specificity of Vasyl Pachovskyi's modernist dramatic thinking. The poetics of his dramatic works The Dream of Ukrainian Night, The Sun of the Ruin, The Sphinx of Europe, Prince Roman the Great, and Het'man Mazepa is analyzed. The specificity of modeling the main characters, the character traits of the psychological types, to which the protagonists of the dramas belong, are discussed. It is shown that a key motif of Pachovskyi's many works is the conflict between mind and action; the ways of presenting this idea through the development of particular characters are analyzed. The Cursed Marko is viewed as a symbolic character that moves from one Pachovskyi's work to another. The interrelationship and interdependence of the author's artistic thinking and this conceptual character are discussed. The gradual process of employing modernist elements for the character development and the introduction of an inner conflict, along with the ideological conflicts between the characters, are investigated. The specificity of the symbolic elements in Vasyl Pachovskyi's dramatic works and their role in presenting the author's main ideas are defined. The peculiarities of the chronotope in Pachovskyi's works are analyzed through the prism of the author's artistic thinking, which is why the combinations of realistic and surrealistic, oneiric time and space dimensions in the artistic world of the plays are also the focus of attention. The interrelation of genre patterns and dramatic symbolism as the type of the author's ideological and aesthetic consciousness is studied. It is proved that the above plays of Vasyl Pachovskyi can be classified as dramatic poems. The importance of the author's definition for a complex analysis of the dramatic works is pointed out.
