Essay

In the dissertation the concept 'the appearance of the person' was studied. It was allocated from the material of literary texts of V. K. Vynnychenko, M. P. Stelmakh and Yu. I. Andrukhovych. Selected writers are outstanding representatives of different literary periods and trends, including modernism, social realism and postmodernism. In our study, we chose the way of concept separation based on the integration of semantic structures. Concepts are divided into basic concept, subconcept, microconcept, segments and elements that are subjected to the superconcept. The structure of the concept 'the appearance of the person' was formed from the material of literary texts of Ukrainian writers. We distinguished 6 subconcepts, 28 microconcept, 34 segments and 14 elements. Analysis of the prose written by V. K. Vynnychenko, including the novel "Notes of the Snub-nosed Mephistopheles" ("Zapysky Kyrpatogo Mephistophelya") and the play "The Black Panther and the Polar Bear" ("Chorna Pantera i Bilyi Vedmid"), showed that the author extensively uses vocabulary that describes human appearance, which uniquely complements the general characteristics of the character. Essence of the characters is conveyed using their portrait description, where attractive appearance does not always mean beauty of the inner world.
