The thesis is devoted to the research of evidentiality in the modern Ukrainian literary language. The object of study is the ways and means of expressing the evidence, which determine its categorical nature, features of semantics, functioning. The first chapter is called „Grammatical semantics of evidentiality: content, status, typology”. It deals with the theoretical principles of the study, the content of the concept „evidentiality”, the main approaches to the study of evidence in grammar. The definition of the categorical status of evidence in the Ukrainian language is suggested. The methodology of research is described. In Ukrainian the most productive aspects for the study of the nature and functioning of evidence, as the material has shown, are functional-semantic, communicative-pragmatic and structural aspects. It is caused by the specifics of the object of study. No special grammatical forms for the indication of the source of information have been detected in the Ukrainian language. Evident semantics is codified in the structure of simple and complex sentences with the help of lexical-semantic and syntactical means that form reportage, inference and perceptual modes. In the Ukrainian language evidence is not grammaticalized, so the indication of the source of information has an intentional character. The speaker pragmatically points to the source of information for the implementation of the communicative goal. In our opinion, universal semantics is an indication of the source of information, the systemicity of lexical and syntactic means of expression, the absence of specialized grammatical meanings for pointing to the source of information, and the functional purpose cause the nature of evidence as grammatical modular semantics within the functional semantic category.
