Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of the hydroecological state of reservoirs in Ukraine using remote monitoring methods. The approaches to improving the methods of monitoring reservoirs with the use of remote sensing data as well as to studying the processes under way in them were grounded. The effectiveness of the use of remote sensing methods in the study of reservoirs, namely their area, temperature and turbidity of water, harmful algal blooms and water quality in general is proved. The practical value of the obtained results is in using a toolkit, which makes it possible to determine the state of the reservoirs and make adjustments to their operating conditions. The algorithms for specifying the area and useful volume of reservoirs using the remote sensing data and GIS-technologies аre proposed. For the first time in the field of study of water bodies of Ukraine, a large amount of satellite images, taken by different spacecraft’s over a long period (1977–2018), was processed and analyzed in the thesis. The scientific novelty of the work is that it has been proposed for the first time methods, algorithms and techniques for monitoring the hydroecological state of reservoirs with the use of remote sensing data and GIS-technologies. This, in particular, concerns the abrasion of the banks, the size of the reservoirs, the distribution of higher aquatic vegetation, qualitative characteristics of water, its algal blooms, etc.
