Essay

The thesis deals with determining the role and place of the diplomatic component of ‘soft power’ in the foreign policy of the United States of America. The research analyzed the theory and practice of the use of ‘soft power’ by the United States as an instrument of diplomatic work, additionally, it makes an attempt to rethink the American experience for improving the tools of positioning Ukraine abroad. Originally coined in the 1990ies by American neoliberal thinker J.S.Nye, the term ‘soft power’ is now broadly accepted by political and academic circles, both by neorealist and neoliberal paradigms of international relations research. ‘Soft power’ is the ability to reach the foreign policy aims by attracting and persuading others to adopt one’s goals. Public diplomacy, cultural diplomacy, electronic and image diplomacy, general attractiveness of a country’s diplomacy and the image of a country are considered as the methods of ‘soft power’. The scientific purpose of the research is to find the place of ‘soft power’ among other foreign policy methods of the United States. The theoretical part includes answering the question – if ‘soft power’ methods are successfully adopted by the U.S. does this automatically evidences that any country can apply such techniques copied from the American experience, or can be modified and adjusted to suit other conditions.
