Essay

The dissertation outlines theoretical and experimental results of substantiation of competency-oriented methods used to form geometric skills of vocational school students of specialties «Wireman (Repair and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment)», «Tailor. Pattern Cutter», «Florist. Window Dresser» and «Hairdresser (Hairstylist). Manicurist». The author has researched peculiarities of the content and organizing a process of teaching geometry at vocational schools. The author has defined a notion «professional orientation of teaching mathematics to students of vocational schools» and indicated a strategic direction of professional orientation of teaching mathematics at such education institutions and ways of implementation of this direction. The dissertation examines a group of geometric skills being inherent to students of these institutions (for the above-mentioned specialties) and determines their components (motivational, semantic, operational and reflective), criteria, indices and levels of maturity. The dissertation contains a definition of a notion «competency profile of vocational school student» and presents thorough descriptions of competency profile components of vocational school students (for the above-mentioned specialties) that form in the process of teaching geometry. The author has developed a model for competency-oriented methods aimed at forming geometric skills of vocational school students of specialties «Wireman (Repair and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment)», «Tailor. Pattern Cutter», «Florist. Window Dresser» and «Hairdresser (Hairstylist). Manicurist». This model encompasses target, semantic, process and organizational, monitor and assessment, and resultative units. The author has substantiated requirements for formulation of goals and outcomes. The author has recompiled and supplemented the content of an academic discipline «Geometry» at these institutions for the above-mentioned specialties, using professional-oriented theoretical material. The dissertation characterizes instruments and organizational modes of teaching geometry. The author has suggested a definition for a notion «profession-oriented geometry problem for vocational school students» and developed a system of profession-oriented geometry problems for the considered specialties. The dissertation discloses the specificity of selection and structuring the geometry problems. The author suggests a system of guidelines for selection of means of information and communication technologies in the process of forming geometric skills of vocational school students.
