Essay

The present work is a complex study of the scientific heritage and organisational and educational activity of the Doctor of Engineering, Professor, rector of the Ukrainian Correspondence Polytechnic Institute (1964-1978), the honourary figure of Ukrainian higher education H. Andreev. The work includes an introduction, three units, conclusions to every unit, general conclusions, the list of used sources and references, as well as appendices. The investigation contains the historiographic analysis. The historiographic basis limitation has been revealed, that proves topicality of the study and allows solving the complex of scientific problems set in the dissertation. The well-grounded historic research of H. Andreev's life, scientific area and his organisational and educational activity hasn't been held yet. The research is grounded on representative source base the important component of which is H. Andreev's and his followers' scientific works, the scientist's personal archive, and documents from archive institutions. Particularly, the documents of 80 records from four archives were drawn to this scientific study, among them are: The State Record Office of Kharkiv region, Central National Scientific and Technical Archive of Ukraine, the archive of "Turboatom" Co Ltd, the archive of the Ukrainian Engineering Pedagogics Academy. The historic reconstruction of H. Andreev's life activity, scientific heritage and organisational and educational activity has been performed in the article. The factors facilitating the development of a scientist have been found out. The author of the dissertation has described the results of his activity at the engineering and management positions of industrial enterprises (namely as a works director at Kharkiv Turboelectric Plant), as well as in higher educational establishments (as a deputy director for research (a vice-rector for research) at Kharkiv Mining Institute (Kharkiv?Institute?of?Mining?Machinery?Manufacturing, Automation?and Computer?Engineering) and as a rector of the Ukrainian Engineering Pedagogics Academy). Reforming these two institutes has been found to be the key line of scientist's organisational activity. Due to his fruitful organisational activity the scientific work within these two institutions became more active, new efficient relations with industrial enterprises were established, their material support was improved, highly experienced academic teaching staff was formed there. Basing on the analysis of a great amount of sources Andreev's contribution into the development of machine-building technology has been determined. It has been substantiated that the scientist developed a new, unique area of inductive and thermal assembly-disassembly of joints with tension. Within the framework of this area, he ran the development of not only innovative technology for assembly and disassembly of joints with tension, but also the equipment for its realization. Together with the group of his followers, the scientist developed facility for inductive heating of the details for assembly and disassembly of the equipment operated on power current. It has been proved that the scientist's research in the sphere of contact voltages allowed revealing the reasons of crack formation and axes wrecking while wheel pairs operating. Theoretical and practical investigations of Professor Andreev gave the opportunity to use automation in the processes of assembly and disassembly of joints with tension for serial and large-scale manufacturing, especially?for enterprises the production activity of which was connected with assembling and disassembling activity. The author has found out that at the beginning of the 60s of the XX century H. Andreev initiated the formation and functioning of the laboratory of machine-building technological process automation which later became the main scientific and educational centre for scientific and research activity and highly skilled academic staff training. 15 Andreev's followers defended their PhD theses under the supervision of this scientist and went into further investigation of their tutor's theme. H. Andreev became famous not only in academic community, but also at the industrial enterprises. With the assistance of this researcher the staff of the laboratory introduced the results of their activity directly into production. H. Andreev's scientific achievements have been thoroughly worked up, systematised and generalised. The scientific and research activity of the scientist has been found to have many aspects of thematic subjects. Among them are: assembly and solidity of press joints; theory and technology of shrink fits; inductive heating of details for assembly; the methods of increasing the strength and service life of joints while thermal assembling; automation and mechanization of assembly and disassembly of joints; disassembly of joints with tension; glass-plastic pipes manufacturing. The characteristic feature of H. Andreev's activity is t
