Essay

Object: Slavic housing of the second half of the 1st millennium A.D. in the Subcarpathian and Volhynia regions in the context of its origins, the development of traditions and methods of construction, reconstruction of the exterior and interior. Purpose: comprehensive analysis and reconstruction of the housing of the Slavs of the Subcarpathian and Volhynia of the second half of the 1st millennium A.D. Methods: analysis and synthesis, induction, deduction, comparative, typological, formalized-statistical, correlation, retrospective, cartographic, historical analogies, stratigraphic, planographic, descriptive. Results: For the first time, research materials of more than 600 dwellings of the second half of the 1st millennium A.D. in the Subcarpathian and Volhynia were systematized and integrally analyzed; statistical analysis of the main empirically fixed signs based on a large number of excavated buildings was carried out; their quantitative and qualitative indicators, dynamics of their development were established; the common and distinctive features of the housing and construction culture of the Slavs both in the regional context and in comparison with the neighboring territories are found; the model of spatial orientation of housing was developed, the factors that determined this indicator were identified; the provision about the advantage of folding, rather than frame-pillar construction of walls in buildings, on the basis of statistical analysis of the number and location of pillar pits and other features is proposed; an informative database on the construction of Slavs, an algorithm for describing the remains of dug buildings, typological schemes in the characterization of dwellings and their elements, approaches to the use of special terminology has been improved. Scope of use: for writing generalizations on medieval history of Ukraine, scientific and educational (textbooks, manuals) works, preparation of exhibitions of historical-ethnographic and archaeological museums, for the development of normative and special courses in higher educational institutions, methodological aids, studying the ethnogenesis of the Ukrainian people in the early Middle Ages.
