The dissertation is devoted to the analysis of practical, scientific, organizational and pedagogical activity of the well-known domestic engineer of railway trains, railroad scientist, specialist in the field of operation of railway transport V. Sokovych, his historical significance and merits of the scientist for the development of the railway business in the first half of the twentieth century. Having systematized a variety of source materials, the author holistically characterizes the main aspects of the development of science and technology of rail transport in the Russian Empire, in the USSR in general and in Ukraine in particular. The contribution of V. Sokovych in the formation of the doctrine of the operation of the railways, his achievements as the organizer of transport education and pedagogical achievements.
