Anosova V. Formation and development of fortification technologies of defense complexes of Western Ukraine (XII-XVIII centuries)

The thesis is the first complex generalized research, in which formation and development of fortification technologies of defence complexes of Western Ukraine (the 12th-18th centuries) is considered. Territorial boundaries of the researched region cover the territories of eight contemporary oblasts: Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Volyn, Rivne, Khmelnytsk, Chernivtsi and Zakarpattia. The choice of the specified region is explained by localization of fortification objects that we have selected for research. The thesis reflects the history of development and processes of transformation of fortification technologies of defencecomplexes in the territory of modern Western Ukraine during the 12th-18th centuries, within the framework of military equipment development; using the example of twenty-four castles (Medzhybizh Fortress,Olesko, Ostroh, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Chortkiv, Klevan and Ugochanskyi castles, castle complexes in Berezhany village, in Dobromyl village, in Kvasiv village, in Pniv village. Laterperiod includes the castles in Stare Selo and Pomoriany,Terebovlia, Olyka, Zolochiv, Pidhirtsi, Zbarazh, Lutsk, Yahilnytsia, Bucha, Sutkovets, Mykulyn castles, as well as the castles in Brody and in Toky) of Western Ukraine. The peculiarities of the regional fortification construction during the specified period are traced. The main factors that influenced development of fortification construction are revealed.
