In the course of the research, the definition of the concept of “agglomeration” has been analyzed based on the definitions of outstanding specialists in the spheres of economics, geography, economical geography, urban planning, sociology and management. The variety of definitions and approaches to the definition of the essence of the concept of agglomeration leads to ambiguous interpretation of its essence, which further creates a significant problem in determining the principles, criteria, and features for determination of agglomerations, in analysis of its spatial structure and composition, and in delimitation of agglomerations.
The main features, properties, and criteria that can serve as the basis to define the territory as an agglomeration have been identified and substantiated.
The existing methods for delimitation of agglomerations have been systematized, and the characteristic features of domestic and foreign approaches for such delimitation have been determined. It was established that each country has its characteristic features for selection of the main criteria for determination of agglomerations, the study of which allows to determine the main stages of delimitation of territories within the area of influence of agglomerations, which are characteristic of the development of urban cities included into an agglomeration. The principles determining the conditions and requirements for improvement and development of methodical tools used for determination of agglomerations have been substantiated.
The method of delimitation of territories within the area of influence of agglomeration has been improved. The methodology includes the development of a unified structural model, based on the works of many domestic and foreign experts. The proposed model consists of five stages and links between them. The unified structural model of delimitation of territories within the area of influence of agglomeration determines its existing and prospective boundaries.
The indicators that can be used to estimate the degree of appurtenance of districts to the area of influence of agglomeration have been developed. These indicators influence the formation of a perspective direction of development of territories within the area of influence of agglomeration.
The composition and perspective boundaries of the area of influence of the Kharkiv agglomeration for the calculation period have been substantiated, and the perspective lines of its development in the southern direction have been formulated. The priority lines of development of the area of influence of the Kharkiv agglomeration have been determined.
