Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the comprehensive study of the historical development of monuments (the end of the X - the first half of the XIII century) on the territory between the Dnieper, Sula, Supiy and Orzhitsa, which was a part of the Principality of Pereyaslav. The detailed description of fortified settlements, their planning, topography and typology is given, the results of their researches are analyzed. Their chronology and influence on the rural districts formation are determined. Six fortified settlements mentioned in the chronicles were alocated on the territory of the study: Voin (first mention - 1054 g.), Goroshyn (1084), Rymiv (1094), Zhelni (1116), Pisochen (1170) and Dubnytsia (1155). On the territory of the research among the fortifications there are "Snake" shafts of two types: classic - in the form of a shaft with a moat, and the escarpment. In the first case, this type of shaft was located in the valley of the left bank of the Dnieper, in the second - on the high right bank of the river Sula. The archaeological inquiries confirmed the interconnection of the "snake" shaft with the settlements. It belongs to the earliest group of monuments and archaeological materials dating from the end of X - the turn of the XI century.
