Essay

The scientific novelty of the thesis lies in the fact that for the first time: summarized the achievements of Ukrainian linguistics from the 20s-30s of the XX century were generalized as a holistic process; it was taken into account the state of Ukrainian linguistics in this period and a wide geopolitical context (policy of the USSR, Poland, Romania and Czechoslovakia); the linguistic-Ukrainian contribution of inter-war Czechoslovakia was a complex phenomenon, taking into account intralinguistic and extralinguistic factors; it is proposed to identify the main linguistic schools for scientific ideas; the perspective of scientific ideas of linguo-Ukrainian studies of 20–30 years of the XX century in the modern scientific discourse is established. In the second part «Functional aspect of the Ukrainian language during the Czechoslovakia: press, research and educational institutions» is described socio- cultural context of the functioning of the Ukrainian language in Czechoslovakia in interwar time. It describes the principles of language policy Czechoslovakia, relevant to the national minorities, and integration strategy of Transcarpathia. Language norms of the Ukrainian language are considered, in particular, on the basis of the first textbook of the Ukrainian language for the Czechs authorship of the M. Bashmak and F. Tichiy «Prakticka učebnice ukrajinskeho jazyka». It is described peculiarities of Ukrainian phonetics, orthoepy, grammar, basic lexical Fund of the Ukrainian language, as well as Linguatronic information. The process of regulation of Ukrainian literary language on the Carpathians that in interwar period belonged to Czechoslovakia is characterized. Considered the evolution of language planning – from rudimentary posthungarian practice of usage of russified iazychie (grammar by A. Voloshyn) to common literary Ukrainian norm. Grammar by I. Pankevych is analyzed in detail. It was created as a compromise between the supporters of proukrainian and prorussian language planning. The strategy of I. Pankevych is described – using of «cosmetic» techniques which formally differentiated the language form the contemporary Ukrainian standard and allowed to introduce the structural rules which unified the dialects of Transcarpathia with common Ukrainian norm. We analyze the strategy of selection of dialect norms which were codified and those which were thoroughly described but rejected. The next stage in language planning in the interwar Transcarpathia is gradual transition towards phonetic orthography and unification with common Ukrainian norm of that time.
