Essay

The presented PhD thesis includes introduction, 4 chapters and conclusions. The first chapter deals with the history of research, methodology and analysis of ‘ploshchadka’ as archaeological record. The second chapter characterizes household and sacred elements of the interior. Analysis of the selection of movable interior details contributes to the chapter. The third chapter deals with the variability of dwellings basing on their interior. Functional variability of the Trypillia dwellings is analyzed in the fourth chapter. Conclusions summarize the results of the analysis. Living and household area of Trypillia dwellings is characterized by a certain degree of variability. On the one hand, the Early Trypillia constructions are different in organization of interior from the later dwellings. Reasons for the change in the related traditions in the transition period from Trypillia A to Trypillia BI may include innovations (place of the smoke extractor was changed), climatic (aridization which caused different organization of living and household space) and influence from the newcomers incorporated into Trypillia population groups. In general, since the BI period interior of Trypillia dwellings becomes standardized. It can be viewed as a cultural marker. Slight variations made possible the distinguishing of 15 variations of dwellings. Presence or lack of a certain element of interior manifests a new variation of Trypillia buildings. Some of these variations are represented by single constructions, but this could be caused by the level of knowledge on ‘ploshchadki’ dated to one or the other period of Trypillia culture.
