Object – basic training for future English teachers in Great Britain; the aim is to analyze theoretical issues and generalize the practice of developing self-educational competence in the process of basic training of future English teachers in Great Britain for the implementation of innovative ideas in the system of higher pedagogical education in Ukraine; methods – general scientific, special, empirical; novelty – for the first time a comprehensive study of the problem of developing self-educational competence in the process of basic training of future English teachers in Great Britain; revealed the approaches of European and domestic scientists to determine the essence of self-educational competence (ability of individual to self-study, self-education, self-improvement, self-choice, self-realization throughout life), its components (ability to formulate learning goals and assess progress in achieving them, plan their own development and self-reflection, acquire knowledge autonomously and take responsibility for their results, meet their own cognitive needs and carry out continuous professional self-improvement, build a personal life strategy and overcome contradictions), pedagogical conditions of development at future English teachers in the process of basic preparation (incentives to set their own learning goals, focus on self-development and professional self-improvement throughout life, tutoring in the development of individual educational trajectory, mastering the technology of «self-directed learning»; the implementation of self-reflection, self assessment and self-control of own educational activity; providing appropriate training and information resources, etc.); the British experience on the defined problem in the following directions is generalized: the maintenance, forms, methods of development of self-educational competence of future teachers of English in the course of basic preparation; resource provision of this process; organization of monitoring of levels of development of the named competence at applicants of a bachelor’s degree; the prospects of creative use of the gained experience in institutions of higher education of Ukraine are outlined (organization of initial assessment of entrants tendencies to pedagogical activity, formation of a value attitude to self-educational activities; introduction of flexible educational-professional programs in accordance with personal and professional development plans, provision of educational autonomy in their mastering; wider practice of distance, electronic, blended learning, active methods and forms of classroom classes, productive types of independent work based on research; creation of an appropriate educational environment and infrastructure of higher education institutions, expansion of the list and scope of self-educational educational and information resources, etc.); results – the data and conclusions obtained in the course of the research can be used by higher education institutions of Ukraine to update the content of educational programs for the first (bachelor) level of higher education in specialty 014 – Secondary education and subject specialization «English language and literature»; revision of educational and working educational programs of disciplines of psychological and pedagogical cycle; conclusion of educational and methodical complexes of professionally-oriented disciplines; preparation of distance courses «Grammar of English», «Practice of oral and written speech», «Methods of teaching English» and development of elective courses («Learning through research», «Technologies of self-directed learning», «Professional career development», etc.), creation of proper infrastructure and resource provision of the process of development of self-educational competence of future English teachers, their career growth.
