Essay

The thesis investigates the life and scientific legacy of the Ukrainian ethnographer, folklorist, expert in oral folk tradition and Ukrainian folk culture, physician and writer Stepan Danylovych Nis (1829-1901). The study analyses Stepan Nis’ ethnographic narrative, defines the issues that the scholar gives particular prominence to, identifies the main fields of the scholar’s ethnographic and folklore research, outlines its content component and information value. Based on the scientific analysis of the state of investigation into the subject, three historiographic periods have been identified, which correlate with certain scientific works classified by issues and themes addressed: 1) 1850-1917; 2) 1918 – the late 1980s; 3) the early 1990s – to the present. It has been established that the recent decades saw the publication of over 60 various papers, which focus on the life and works of the scholar.
