Essay

The dissertation for the first time considers the history of the Ukrainian theatre of Eastern Halychyna (Galicia) of the interwar period through the prism of the theory of modernization, reveals the specifics and dynamics of renewing organizational and production forms of the Western Ukrainian theatre, and systematically studies the processes of ideological, aesthetic and genre stylistic transformations. The concept of modernization is interpreted as a wide range of processes aimed at "updating the language of culture", which included the discourses of Europeanization, intellectualism, anti-populism, "the cult of modernity", secularization, decanonization and debunking of "cultural taboos", as well as urbanization of Ukrainian cultural space. Particular focus is given to the discourse of nationalism, which is especially important for the Ukrainian context. The thesis draws attention to the growing self-awareness of theatrical art and the changing model of communication between art and recipients (viewer's activation); to the participation of the new national capital in cultural life; to the increasing attention to the formal side of work, the differentiation of theatrical genres and forms, and, accordingly, the emergence of a polyphonic modernist discourse with its modeling, symbolic principle of reproduction and attitude to reality.
