Essay

Cognitive activity in thyroid dysfunction was studied in experiments on animals of three age groups. Experimental hyperthyroidism in juvenile and young rats caused an anxiolytic effect and improvement (in juveniles) or maintenance of spatial memory control in the Morris water labyrinth, accompanied by an increase in gamma-aminobutyric acid in the neocortex and gluteum. Anxiogenic effect and deterioration of cognitive activity were observed in older animals, which was accompanied by an excessive increase in the content of glutamate in the cortex and glycine in the hippocampus. Experimental hypothyroidism contributed to the formation of anxiogenic effect and deterioration of cognitive activity throughout ontogenesis
