Essay

The scientific novelty of the obtained results is that for the first time in Ukrainian art history the folk choreographic culture of Western Podillia is considered as an integral scientific subject in the context of its interrelations with related genres of folk art, first of all traditional instrumental music and decorative arts. The paper provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of scientific works. The thesis introduces little-known archival materials into scientific circulation, in particular from regional periodicals. The scientific paper identifies the main factors of transformation processes. The thesis specifies the method of graphic notation of folk dances through the introduction into scientific circulation of the developed schematic signs of dance movements. The scientific paper suggests a new look at the form of scientific and creative activity to solve the problem of preserving the regional dance tradition (ensemble-laboratory of the Western Podillia ethnochoreography. The thesis research develops the work on the further improvement of scientific and executive reconstruction and staging of Western Podillia traditional dances. The dissertation consists of three sections. The first section – «Historiography and theoretical and methodological foundations of the study» presents the historical and geographical background of the region and indicates the ethnographic boundaries of the studied region. The thesis presents the source base on the genesis and evolution of Ukrainian folk dance in general, which covers the historiography of the development of folk choreographic culture of Western Podillia. The research paper presents modern researchers of Western Podillia and their scientific works. The dissertation reveals the main theoretical approaches to the key concepts of research, among which the main ones are «folk choreographic culture», «dance tradition», «scientific and performing reconstruction». To obtain comprehensive information on the dynamics of folk choreographic culture of Western Podillia during the XX – early XXI century we used a number of theoretical and empirical methods. The thesis covers the research and development of dance notation systems. The research paper offers for scientific circulation the author's developments of the recording of dance positions in the form of graphic symbols. The thesis provides transcription of various dance samples. The second section – «Folk dance as a component of the formation and development of choreographic culture of Western Podillia» provides a genre classification of folk choreographic culture of the region, where traditional dances belong to such genres as: ritual, household and those that are considered as folk (naplyvovi).
