Essay

The thesis provides new insights into the problem of formation of future interpreters’ English language strategic competence in bilateral interpreting. It defines the essence of the concept «English language strategic competence of future interpreters» and sheds new light on the diagnostic techniques aimed at assessing the level of strategic competence formation through the use of a set of criteria (ability to use global translation strategies, ability to use cognitive strategies, ability to use local translation and communicative strategies, ability to use social-affective strategies), corresponding indicators, as well as the description of strategic competence formation levels (high, optimal, medium, low). The thesis gives an account of the following approaches to the formation of future interpreters’ English language strategic competence in bilateral interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous): communicative, competence-based, synergetic, resource-based and reflection strategies approach. The thesis analyses the psycholinguistic aspects of interpreting from the point of view of interaction of language and thinking, peculiarities of perception and understanding of texts of two contacting languages in the process of interpreting, peculiarities of attention and the role of mindset, background and branch knowledge, the role of learning and guessing (involving the mechanism of auditory recognition of speech), memory functioning, mechanisms of speech compression / decompression, etc. These have been used to single out a range of strategies, training of which enables the formation of the appropriate level of future interpreters’ strategic competence in bilateral interpreting.
