The object of study — European cinema of the second half of XX century. — the beginning of the XXI century. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is that on the basis of culturological approach a comprehensive study of cultural and artistic representation of the image of Japan as a multifaceted cultural phenomenon: systematized professional literature on the “image of Japan” in European cinema, identified basic approaches to this issue; the evolution of cinematic representations of the image of Japan from the second half of the XX to the beginning of the XXI century is traced; features of cinematic and image types “picturesque country” and “yellow danger” are defined; the influence of the Japanese cultural policy of “soft power” on the change of the receptive paradigm of Japan in the West and its manifestations in the works of prominent directors is revealed.
