Essay

The paper expounds on the origin and evolvement of the computer professional language as a variety of the professional Ukrainian language, draws attention to its modern formation, conditioned by the ongoing international development of the computer industry; emphasizes the English coloring of computer terminology in various languages, including Ukrainian, based on the established linguistic contacts with the original language and its conditionality (the United States being the place where the computer industry originated). The thesis outlines new approaches to studying the nature of the term at the present stage. The importance and expediency of conveying verb semantics (names of process, action or state) in scientific texts through verb terms are substantiated based on the shift of accents of scientific-paradigmatic aspects of linguistic research. Two types of verbs denoting various concepts (processes, actions or states) in the computer sphere are distinguished, taking into account the presence/absence in the Ukrainian language of translation verb equivalents from the donor language – verbs of equivalent and non-equivalent translation. The origin of equivalent translation verbs (borrowed and native) and, accordingly, the methods and mechanisms of term formation are determined. The author determines ways of Ukrainian translations of non-equivalent verb terms; characterizes peculiarities of their semantic manifestations; researches into the possibilities of intra-verbal creation of terms; reveals features of national identity in the formation of Ukrainian computer terminology.
