In the dissertation for the first time the social and communicative aspects of political and professional activity of Volodymyr Starosolsky is comprehensively studied on the basis of his journalistic heritage, press reports, memoirs, diaries and letters. The interdependence of V. Starosolosky’s main journalistic ideas and priorities of his political and professional activity was determined due to the social-communication method. The journalistic feature of his memoirs and diaries is argued. Journalistic heritage of V. Starosolsky, published in Ukrainian and foreign publications was thoroughly analyzed. On the base of conducted analysis, the main «concepts» of his journalism were determined: «nation», «independence», «sobornist», «particularism», «socialism», «democracy» were described. The significance of German idealism (G. Hegel, J. Fichte) for journalistic and scholarly heritage is identified. The role of V. Starosolsky in forming of Ukrainian nation at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is revealed, especially in the context of the destruction of the old patterns of Ukrainian communication space in Galicia and creation of a new paradigm of «independent United Ukraine», as well as in the formation of social communication channels and mechanisms for implementing the idea of Ukraine's independence. The important features of journalistic and political activities of V. Starosolsky are demonstrated, that is a high intellectual level of publications and consistent observance and promotion of moral principles in politics. This contributed to the definition of his social role as a politician, intellectual figure and moral authority in communication space of Ukraine at that time. V. Starosolsky strongly opposed the concepts of «organic labor», «politics as a game and possibility» that were popular among Ukrainians in Galicia exposing his own concepts of «thinking», «politics as a science and art» grounded on his idealistic worldview and high intellectual level. V. Starosolsky's adherence to the principles and ideas of social democracy and their promoting in his social and communication activity are revealed. It is claimed that democracy and a just social system are in a basis of V. Starosolsky’s national idea concept for the independent Ukrainian state.
