Essay

The thesis deals with the problem of teaching future navigators how to write business correspondence in English. The research is aimed at theoretical reasoning, practical elaboration, and experimental testing of teaching future navigators how to write business correspondence in English. The professional and linguistic features of the navigators' business correspondence in English have been determined. The semantic structure of the future navigators' speech behavior has been established. The process of teaching future navigators how to write business correspondence in English, taking in account all its links, has been modelled. The criteria for evaluating the levels of future navigators' language proficiency and development of skills of business correspondence in English, namely: language criterion, limited-speech criterion, expanded speech criterion and professional-speech criterion have been defined. The manual "Professional English for Navigators: Ship's Correspondence" has been worked out. The results of the research can be used for teaching English to students of the fourth year of study of maritime institutions of higher education, as well as for teaching foreign languages in a professional field.
