This thesis is explores the medieval city of Lutches'k. From its origins as an early center of one of the Volyn' Slavic tribes, Lutches'k developed into a large urban center. At the end of the tenth century, a large castle was built in the city. This castle was instrumental in expanding the power base of the Kievan state system in the Styr river basin. In the eleventh century, the power of the local prince expanded and as a result, the city expanded. Two areas of settlement are clearly demarcated during this period, the dytynets (residence of the prince) and the outlying urban settlement. In the twelfth and the early thirteenth century, Lutches'k is the largest urban center of Volyn' and the capital of the Volyn' kingdom. The establishment of the Podil suburb indicates continued growth. In the second half of the thirteenth century and the early fourteenth century, Lutches'k continues to prosper and remains an independent kingdom. During this period, stone fortifications appear on the Upper and Lo wer Castle. At the end of the fourteenth and the beginning of the fifteenth century, Lutches'k begins to lose its political significance, but remains as important urban center.
