Essay

The author of the thesis considers the problem of forming the territory of one of the biggest centres of the Rus Land - Pereyaslavl Rusky, he determines the principal stages of it's development, researches into social and topographic as well as planning structure of separate components of the town, examines the problems of historical demography, localisation and attribution of various objects. It has been ascertained that Pereyaslavl appeared at the elose of the Xth century (years 988-993) as a big town sitated at the border-line of Rus, at the cross-roads of two important ways leading from the Dnieper's Left Bank Territory to Kyiv. It has been found out that the forming of the town's area had two stages. During the first stage (the end of the Xth - the thirties of the XIIth century) simultaneously with the building of the dytynets the territories of the town outskirts and suburbs were gradually populated, the settlement increased to it's biggest proportions (123-125 hectares), the population was 11-11 ,5 thousand people. In the beginning of the second stage (the thirties-forties of the XIIth century - 1239) the fortifications of the town outskirts were built, but the total area of the town decreased. The population decreased too by 2-3 thousand, after which it remained stable till 1239 when the town was destroyed by Tatar-Mongols.
