The author investigates the leading trends, main factors, and contradictions in the development of teacher education in the United States during the period 1960-2000; comparisons are drawn with teacher education in other parts of the world, with special attention to the implications of the American education experience for the reform of teacher preparatio in the Ukraine; the essence of the contemporary American approach to teacher education is the spiral structuring of the teacher training curriculum, which includes three levels.
