Essay

For the first time on the basis of a wide range of sources, the aspirant presents the dissertation which is an integrated ethnographic research of Priazovye Greeks' traditional culture of the late 18th-early 21st century. The aspirant has carried out comparative and generalizing analysis of the demographic condition, the state of the dialects as well as the ritual and the musical habits of the ethnos. The research evidences the fact that their language as well as their material and spiritual culture include Old Greek, Turkic and Slavic elements. The aspirant has also defined the etymology and the origin of the bulk of terms related to culture and everyday life used by Hellenic-phonic and Turkic-phonic Greeks. A special emphasis is laid on the analysis of field ethnographic materials the aspirant has collected from 20 Greek villages. The research also expands on the current condition of Mariupol Greeks' ethnic culture.
