Essay

The thesis examines comprehensively the housing and culture of everyday living of urban population of Ukraine in 20-30s of the XX century basing on the wide range of little-known archive sources. The thesis contains the reconstruction of the culture of everyday living of habitants of Ukrainian cities, the exposure of the dynamics of changes in the everyday living of workers during the watershed period. Besides, the thesis covers the culture of everyday life of different layers of city habitants and the reasons of failure of the Bolshevik utopia model of urban environment formation and establishment of a new everyday living of Soviet people. The transformation of the material culture of urban population is being analyzed here. The paper reveals the complicated processes of adaptation of dwellers to the cohabitation in communal flats for the first time. The thesis outlines the difficult situation in the sphere of providing housing for urban habitants and proves that deformation of the previously formed urban environment occurred due to the flat redistribution. This resulted in the substantial changes of social and cultural environment of Ukrainian cities. The attempts to solve the housing problem in the cities created a new form of cohabitation - room per room housing. This phenomenon of the Soviet everyday living experience became an important element of the city culture formation in the period between the wars.
