Essay

The dissertation focuses on researching the prehistory and the first steps in establishing a system of professional pre-service education and practical training of foreign languages teachers in Ukraine within the period of 1900?1964. The author suggests her own chronology of the stages of forming the system during the defined period: 1st stage (1900-1917) - establishing first German-Roman departments at the Faculties of History and Philology of Kyiv and Kharkiv Universities and Kyiv Higher Women's Courses; 2nd stage (1917-1930) - forming certain general grounds of professional pedagogical education in the process of developing the national system of education in Ukraine; 3rd stage (1930-1940) - starting and enlarging a network of educational institutions for professional learning of foreign languages; 4th stage (1940-1964) - creating a system of professional education of foreign languages teachers. Considerable attention is paid to highlighting the peculiarities in the form, contents and methods of professional education and training at different educational institutions of training foreign languages teachers. It has been proved that by the first half of 1960s the professional education of foreign languages teachers in Ukraine had obtained all the characteristics of a system. Some historic experiences important for the contemporary stage of professional education of foreign languages teachers have been singled out.
